Proposal shots loved for a lifetime
She thought she was out on the town with friends, celebrating a promotion, when I stepped in and asked the group to take a few PR photos for the Maritime Museum of San Diego. What she didn’t know was that her soon-to-be fiancé was hidden on deck, waiting to surprise her.
She fell for every part of the surprise, hook, line, and sinker, and said yes aboard the Star of India with friends and family waiting just behind them at the restaurant. It was an incredible moment to witness
Working as an engagement photographer in Southern California means something different every single week. One session might be a quiet sunrise walk along the cliffs in Laguna Beach, all soft light and salt air. The next might be a couple wandering through Joshua Tree at golden hour, rock formations stretching out behind them like something out of another world. That variety is one of the best parts of this work — Southern California doesn't give you one backdrop, it gives you dozens, and every couple gets to choose the one that actually feels like them.
What hasn't changed, session to session, is the approach. I shoot documentary-first — unposed, observant, built around what's actually happening between two people rather than what looks good staged for a camera. An engagement session isn't a performance. It's a real hour or two of your actual relationship, captured the way it really looks — the nervous laugh before the first shot, the moment one of you says something that makes the other crack up, the quiet in-between moments neither of you would think to pose for.
Working across San Diego and up through Temecula wine country has meant shooting everything from beach elopements to vineyard engagement sessions to full urban shoots downtown. Each location changes the light, the mood, the pace of the shoot — but the goal stays the same every time: get out of the way enough that the two of you forget the camera's there, and capture what's left when you do.

What to wear
What you wear matters, but it doesn’t need to be stressful. The goal is to look like the best version of yourselves, not like you’re wearing costumes for a photoshoot.
I always recommend outfits that feel elevated, comfortable, and true to your style. Think movement, texture, flattering fits, and colors that work well together without being too matchy.
Neutrals, earthy tones, deeper tones, and softer color palettes usually photograph beautifully, especially in outdoor Southern California light.
I usually suggest avoiding loud logos, overly busy patterns, or anything that pulls attention away from you. For many couples, one dressier look and one more relaxed look works perfectly. I’m happy to help you plan outfits so everything feels cohesive and intentional without overthinking it.
How long do sessions take
Most engagement sessions are long enough to let you settle in, get comfortable, and create variety without feeling rushed. I like giving us enough room to move naturally through the session so it feels relaxed instead of packed too tight.
If we’re working at one location, the session usually gives us plenty of time for a full story and different looks within the same environment.
If we’re planning a surprise proposal, I build around the moment itself so nothing feels forced and you still get time afterward to enjoy being newly engaged while
I capture the excitement. Some sessions are simple and intimate, and some deserve a little more space to breathe. I’ll help guide you toward what fits best.
